The British Canoeing Awarding Body Advanced Sea Kayak Coach Training course is a comprehensive 2-day course designed to enhance coaching skills for advanced open water environments. This is the next step on the BCAB professional coaching pathway for those who have already taken their BCAB Sea Kayak Coach training and assessment. 

You’ll dive deeper into the philosophy of coaching, learning how to align your coaching style with your individual values and beliefs. You’ll develop your technical and tactical understanding relevant to advanced environments, creating strategies for delivering coaching sessions while on the move in open water settings. We’ll help you understand how to utilise environmental constraints to enhance learning and manage coaching settings in more challenging conditions. This course will help you to grow and mature into an even more inspiring, motivating and engaging coach.

  • Coaching Philosophy: Exploring and developing personal coaching philosophies to align with individual values and beliefs.
  • Games with Aims for Warm-Ups: Utilising engaging activities to prepare learners physically and mentally for coaching sessions.
  • Site-Specific Coaching: Emphasising the importance of accurate information gathering to tailor coaching sessions effectively to specific environments.
  • Coaching Sessions: Providing opportunities for participants to practice coaching, receive feedback, and develop technical and tactical understanding relevant to advanced water environments.
  • Coaching on the Move: Developing strategies for delivering coaching sessions while on the move in open water settings.
  • Optimising the Learning Environment: Understanding how to utilize environmental constraints to enhance learning and manage coaching settings in advanced water.
  • Reflective Practice: Encouraging self-evaluation and reflection to continually improve coaching effectiveness.
  • Development Phase Guidance: Supporting participants in planning their development between training and assessment, ensuring they gain appropriate experiences and know when they are ready for assessment.
  • Session Planning: Assisting coaches in creating adaptable and progressive session plans that align with their coaching philosophy and the needs of their learners.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? +

This is the next step on the BCAB professional coaching pathway for those who have already taken their Sea Kayak Coach training and assessment. 

EXPERIENCE LEVEL +

If you’re thinking of taking this course, you should already be a confident independent paddler in  advanced conditions, ideally at the Advanced Sea Kayak Award level or equivalent.

WHAT COMES NEXT? +

The next step will be booking onto your Advanced Sea Kayak Coach assessment. 

WHAT WILL I BE ABLE TO DO AFTER THE ASSESSMENT? +

You will have the knowledge to coach in sea kayaks, touring kayaks, and sit-on-tops within a moderate sea environment, working with both beginners new to the sport and paddlers looking to enhance their skills.

As a coach, you may choose to operate independently or be employed by a club, center, or organisation. Your role allows you to tailor coaching sessions to support learners and deliver British Canoeing Awarding Body  Awards and Training, including BCAB Personal Performance Awards:

  • Sea Kayak Award
  • Progressive Sea Kayak Award

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR THIS COURSE? +

You may find these resources from the British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) helpful.

WHERE? +

For practical sessions, you’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.

WHAT TO BRING +

In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel etc.
