What to expect on a BCAB Safety and Rescue Course
On this 2-day British Canoeing Awarding Body accredited practical course, you’ll paddle an awe-inspiring stretch of the Pembrokeshire coastline with expert guidance, developing the tools to calmly navigate common scenarios which arise at sea in both sheltered and moderate conditions.
You’ll learn how to identify risks and implement practical solutions, raising your awareness of personal safety and building confidence to perform rescue techniques. You’ll leave with an increased sense of resilience and self-reliance, knowing you can keep yourself and others safe on self-led sea kayak excursions. All this with the backdrop of Pembrokeshire’s spectacular coastline with a group of like-minded paddlers.

We may explore areas up to 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of tidal movement up to 2 knots.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL +
Participants need to either hold the BCAB (formerly BC) Personal Performance Sea Kayak Award or equivalent ability to the paddling environment and have the boat control required to participate fully in the course.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? +
You may wish to take this course if you’re working towards a qualification from the British Canoeing Awarding Body. For example, it is included as part of our Sea Kayak Leader Training course.
You may be part of an organised sea kayak club, a group of friends, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler.
Suitable craft include sea kayaks and sea specific sit on tops.
It’s a widely applicable course and is for anyone wanting to know how to stay out of trouble at sea and keep themselves and those around them safe in a variety of situations.
QUALIFICATIONS GAINED +
This is a practical skills course with no assessments or qualifications.
WHERE? +
You’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.
WHAT TO BRING +
We provide all specialist kit and equipment.
In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel etc.
