What to expect on an Introduction to Sea Kayaking course

Explore an astoundingly beautiful area of the Pembrokeshire coastline in a small group with the shared aim to gain a grounding in the basics of sea kayaking. 

Our multi-day Introduction to Sea Kayaking provides a solid foundation from which to grow your sea kayaking confidence. Encountering a diverse range of environments and conditions along the Pembrokeshire Coastline, we will equip you with the knowledge and skills to plan your own trips and safely navigate the open sea.

COURSE CONTENT +

This course is designed to give you a foundational introduction to sea kayaking, covering the following topics:

  • Basic boat handling
  • Proper paddling form
  • How to launch and land your sea kayak
  • How to perform basic rescues
  • Simple navigation principles 
  • The basics of tidal planning
  • Weather patterns 
  • Foundations of safety at sea
  • Essential kit and equipment use
  • Marine and environmental awareness

Small group sizes mean we have the opportunity to tailor the course to the interests of the group. If you have any specific areas you wish to cover, you’ll have the opportunity to suggest these at the outset. 

With plenty of scope for personalised coaching, we can help you reach your highest potential throughout the course.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL +

To attend this course, you should:

  • Be physically and mentally fit
  • Be comfortable in and on the water
  • Be able to swim or be happy to float
  • Have paddled a sea kayak or sit-on-top (for at least five days)

AGE RESTRICTIONS +

The course is suitable for all ages. 

WHO IS THIS COURSE +

Anyone with a small amount of experience (5+ days) looking to build their confidence and skill set on the water in a beautiful coastal setting.

Perhaps you’re aiming to buy your own sea kayak, if so, this course could be for you. You’ll come away with the essential skills to plan your own trips including tidal planning and weather forecasting. 

You may be part of an organised sea kayak club, a group of friends, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler. 

QUALIFICATIONS GAINED +

This is a practical skills course with no assessments or qualifications. However, it can be tied in with British Canoeing Awarding Body  (formerly British Canoeing) Personal Performance Sea Awards.

WHERE +

You’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.

WHAT TO BRING +

In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel etc.
