What to expect on a BCAB Sea Kayak Coach Training course

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Sea Kayak Coach Training course is for anyone aspiring to develop their career as a professional sea kayak coach. This is the next step after completing your BCAB Core Coach Training.  

We’ll dive into the philosophy of coaching and help you recognise and adapt to different learning styles. You’ll learn how to create an optimum learning environment and encourage progress by offering inspiring and personal constructive feedback. You’ll develop your own unique coaching style with both safety and enjoyment at the heart of your operation.

AGE RESTRICTIONS +

You may take this training course before you turn 16, but you must be aged 16 or over at the time of the Sea Kayak Coach Assessment.

  • Risk Assessment and Management: Identifying potential hazards and implementing strategies to mitigate risks during coaching sessions.
  • Understanding Learners: Recognizing different learning styles and adapting coaching methods accordingly.
  • Providing Feedback: Mastering effective communication techniques to offer constructive feedback to learners.
  • Reflective Practice: Encouraging self-evaluation to continually improve coaching effectiveness.
  • Assessment Preparation: Guidance on meeting the requirements for the Sea Kayak Coach assessment.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? +

If you’re at the beginning of your paddlesports coaching career and have taken the BCAB Core Coach or equivalent course, this is the next step towards becoming a coach in the specific discipline of sea kayaking.  

If you’re already a passionate coach, this course will continue your professional development and offer some new and refreshing insights from our highly experienced coaches.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL +

If you’re thinking of taking this course, you should already be a confident independent paddler in  moderate conditions, ideally at the Paddle Explore Award level or equivalent.

WHAT COMES NEXT? +

The next step will be booking onto your Sea Kayak Coach assessment

Following this, you may wish to join the Advanced Sea Kayak Coach training and assessment.

WHAT WILL I BE ABLE TO DO AFTER THE ASSESSMENT? +

You will have the knowledge to coach in sea kayaks, touring kayaks, and sit-on-tops within a moderate sea environment, working with both beginners new to the sport and paddlers looking to enhance their skills.

As a coach, you may choose to operate independently or be employed by a club, center, or organisation. Your role allows you to tailor coaching sessions to support learners and deliver British Canoeing Awarding Body  Awards and Training, including BCAB Personal Performance Awards: 

  • Paddle Start Award
  • Paddle Discover Award
  • Paddle Explore Award
  • Sea Kayak Award

How can I prepare for this course? +

You may find these resources from the British Canoeing Awarding Body helpful.

Where? +

For practical sessions, you’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.

what to bring +

In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel etc.
