What to expect on a BCAB Inland Open Water Safety and Rescue course
This 6-hour British Canoeing Awarding Body practical course is designed to equip you with simple, applicable strategies to navigate a range of common issues which arise in inland open water environments. All 7 modules are interactive, practical sessions and can be taken in a range of crafts. You’ll get to know key safety frameworks, get used to performing self-rescue, deep-water rescue and assistance techniques, practice using safety equipment and explore simple practical solutions to commonly arising problems. All in a truly remarkable location, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

The Inland Open Water Safety and Rescue course is a 6-hour programme that consists of 7 modules.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL +
Participants need to hold the relevant BCAB Personal Performance Award or equivalent ability in/on their preferred craft due to the paddling environment and the boat/board control required to complete the course. For example, the Open Water Touring Award or Progressive Canoe Award would be seen as the appropriate level of ability to fully engage on the course.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? +
You may be part of an organised sea kayak club, a group of friends, an adventurous family or you may be a solo paddler.
This course is widely applicable and suitable for anyone wanting to undertake journeys in an inland open water environment using a range of crafts.
QUALIFICATIONS GAINED +
This is a practical skills course with no assessments or qualifications but we can issue you a certificate of attendance from the British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB).
WHERE? +
You’ll meet at our base near Solva to get kitted up (exact location will be shared in your confirmation of booking) and we’ll head to a nearby harbour which we’ve chosen to best suit the conditions on the day.
WHAT TO BRING +
We can provide all specialist kit and equipment, though you may wish to bring your own craft & kit.
In your confirmation of booking, you’ll receive a full list of basic items to bring on the day e.g. bathers to wear under the wetsuit, a water bottle, a towel etc.
Please also bring a packed lunch and any other snacks you require for the day.
